July 10, 2025 - Finished Chapter 1 of the Advanced GIS Book

Well, I finalized two more figures and completed the video tutorials for the Advanced GIS book today. This represented about 24 hours of work this week so far. 

Other work I have been doing:

Finally finished going over all the talks from SCEC 2024 (about 3 hours of work). 
Started reviewing IMW grant proposals for the reviewer panel I am serving on in August (about 3 hours of work this week). 

Total work = 30 hours M-R. 

I also got over my cold and got back on the bike and am gearing up for our trip to London/Brussels. Reserved a gravel bike to ride for 3-4 days while in London. 

I am going to pause on book writing for now. Next work planned:

Reviewing Proposals. 

Start writing papers!

Week 4 - Fall 2025 - Chapter 2: Representing Topography and Comparing Elevation with Time, Tori Updates, UVU shooting

This week I drafted most of the text of chapter 2 of the advanced GIS book that I am writing (10 pages of writing so far). I also created 3 figures, but I still need to create 5 more figures and I need to create two separated practical application sections of the chapter along with accompanying video examples. This will likely the be next week's work. It would be great to be able to finish the chapter in just two weeks!  Tori's results from her radiography and ultra sound came back as positive news with no sign of spread to the lungs or other vital organs. The results from the lymph node biopsies on her leg have not yet come back and we are also waiting on some other blood work. While she is really quite happy and playful with the cooler weather that has arrived, I am worried that I can feel some small bumps on her leg near the surgery scar. I really hope these are not already re-growth of the tumor, but that is possible given it's aggressive nature. If true then additional...

Weeks 10+11 Fall 2025 - Department Meeting(s), GE committee, TLF MS, Chapter 3 Adv GIS Book

Whoa, getting behind in posting this sabbatical blog/journal. This post covers the last week of October and first week of November (through the following weekend).  I attended two department meetings in a row, one in person and the second over TEAMs. The motivation was just to touch base and being 1/3 of the way through the sabbatical I also wanted to light a motivational fire for myself. It worked. I was amazed by the nitty gritty details of the two meetings and how frustrating all the little things can be, especially when they have so little to do with teaching or research. Most things at meeting seem to have to do with service and/or administration which is mostly satisfying the ideas of others outside of the department and even the University. Anyway, I am pretty convinced that most of that stuff is to keep faculty away from doing anything academic. It's basically a war against knowledge coming down from above. Spring 2026 week 4: In New Zealand, Draft of Subsidence Paper

I’m writing from the South Island of New Zealand. Spent a few days in Auckland, climbed several cinder cones and swam in the comfortable 70 degree waters. Flew to Wellington, spent an evening there, hiked an escarpment above the Wellington fault and then completed a draft of a manuscript about lidar differencing and ground subsidence in Southern Utah for the Journal Remote Sensing before embarking for the pre conference field trip that I’m on now. The field trip began with a ferry ride on the Cook Straight, great weather today, but I cannot imagine how windy it must get in stormy conditions! Then we spent the day driving across the many valleys and ranges associated with the oblique slip faults in the northern half of the South Island, ending the day near the 2016 Kaikoura ruptures. Looking forward to tomorrow’s second half of the field trip and arriving in Christchurch for the conference!
